Emiliem, Inc. Press Release - September 26, 2006

Edwin P. Ching, J.D., Ph.D., VP Intellectual Property to present workshop on Intellectual Property and Critical Paths.

Edwin P. Ching, J.D., Ph.D., VP Intellectual Property of Emiliem, Inc. will present a Workshop on Intellectual Property at the DDDS 2006 Drug Discovery and Development Summit on Monday, November 27, 2006 in Phoenix, AZ.   The fundamentals of patent law will be introduced, followed by a description of the practical relevance to the researcher and drug developer.  The workshop will include a description of intellectual property opportunities created by critical path technologies, with a focus on biomarker strategies.

In a 2004 report “Innovation and Stagnation; Challenge and Opportunity on the Critical Path to new Medicinal Products” FDA stated that… “A new product development toolkit -- containing powerful new scientific and technical methods such as animal or computer-based predictive models, biomarkers for safety and effectiveness, and new clinical evaluation techniques -- is urgently needed to improve predictability and efficiency along the critical path from laboratory concept to commercial product”.

Ching noted that patent protection over discoveries is a major driver for technology development, and that knowledge must come from both the basic sciences and  insights into specific patient populations that represent a targeted group more likely to respond to treatment or those potentially susceptible to adverse effects.
